winter snowmen pyrographyStep 1

Lightly sand your basswood plaque with 320-grit sandpaper.  Make a printed copy of the pattern.  Fold the pattern paper, side to side, to find the center line of the design.  Align the center line fold with the v-indent and point of the heart plaque.  Tape into place.  Using graphite paper under the pattern trace the design.  Remove the pattern and graphite paper.

snowmen pyrography projectStep 2

On a medium temperature setting, using a ball tip or looped tip pen, begin the shading of the three snowmen in the design.  The light source for my burning is from the right side which places the darkest shadows on the left.

Work a layer of shading along the outer edges of the ball shapes in each snowman.  The darkest areas will be where the snowball touches or tucks under another element.  Note the darkest area of shading in the left side snowman’s face falls on the left side under the edge of the hat.  In the same snowman, his body has the darkest shading on the left side of the scarf.

On a hot temperature setting, burn the face, nose, and coal buttons.  Use a tightly packed scrubbie stroke for all shading.

winter snowmen scene pyrographyStep 3

Fill in the trees with the tightly packed scrubbie stroke on a medium-hot setting.  Add fine line shading to the pines behind the snowmen on a medium setting, using the loop tip or ball tip pen.  This pattern can easily be adapted to a taller rectangle board by extending or stretching the background trees.

Christams snowmen pyrography projectStep 4

With the shading complete, begin your outlining and detailing using a hot temperature setting and the ball tip or loop tip pen.  The tassels on the scarves and the pom pom for the hat are worked using short straight lines that begin at the scarf or hat and reach away from the snowman.  This places the darkest part of the burn line against the fabric, with the paler end in the air area.

A small touch-and-lift spot is worked at the tip of each tassel thread.  A dark solid shadow is worked under each group of pine tree branches.  Add snowflakes by working a six-point star in the background area.

Using a white artist eraser, remove any remaining graphite tracing lines.  Clean the eraser dust with a dry cloth.

Christmas card pyrography projectStep 5

Use colored pencils to decorate your finished burning.  Work with a well sharpened pencil to insecure that color is applied in the wood grain lines.  Work in thin, light layers of color, adding more layers to slowly develop your final coloring.

You can lay one color of pencil over another to create gradually blended areas.  The background trees were first worked in yellow-green, followed with a medium green as the tree neared the ground line.  The right side snowman’s hat was worked first in yellow, then orange was worked over the yellow as the hat neared the snowman’s head and the pom pom.  Red was used on the hat band.

Step 6

With a pencil add your holiday greeting, date, and name to the bottom area of the heart.  Seal the work with several light coats of acrylic spray sealer, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.  Your Christmas Snowmen is ready to display.

Today’s focus project: Chip Carving Seminar

Chip carving has become for the woodworker an art form complete in itself. This technique uses triangular shaped cuts that create intricate and intriguing designs dancing across the surface of the wood. Patterns for chip carving are defined by a few basic elements, as the triangle or free form line, yet by varying the size and position of these elements new patterns are created.

Wood Block Prints

Wood Block Prints

By L.S. Irish

Incised Carving Project

Supplies and tools needed:

  • basswood blank several inches larger that your design pattern, one inch or thicker
  • small v-gouge for background work
  • small u-gouge for background work
  • bench knife for detailing
  • pattern copied in reverse of the final printing
  • tracing paper
  • sanding board -large flat board with a large sheet of sand paper attached
  • small piece of hardwood as maple to burnish the block surface
  • block printing ink
  • sheet of glass about 9″ x 12″
  • ink roller
  • clamping board
  • drying board for paper prints
  • c-clamps
  • soft clean cloths and cotton swabs
  • paper, heavy weight without a glossy surface (print making paper is available through most arts and crafts stores)
  • soft lead pencil for signing your prints

The intrigue of incised carving is highlighted with the classic woodcut prints of the Renaissance era. Fine artists such as Durer used the incised line to create finely detailed paintings with exquisite perspective and dimensional effects.

In the woodcut print block the incised carved technique is used to remove the background of the designs, leaving only the pattern lines at the original wood surface level. This is the reverse of the incised carving for decorative purposes, here the surface is your final pattern.

With wood block prints it is important to note that the design you carve will print in reverse. What you carve on the left of the block will appear mirrored on the right side of the print. Therefore any writing that you want on the final print must be carved into the block in reverse. Otherwise you will end up with wonderful holiday cards that have Happy Holidays on them backwards!

Design Pattern
Wood Cut Block Print

Follow the basic techniques as described in Incised Carving above. For wood cut block prints chose a wood the will be easy to work, as basswood, since you will be creating fine details within the design. Also chose a thick slab for the carving, as least one inch or more in depth. This carved slab will be subjected to repeat layers of moisture from the printers ink, the thicker the slab the less likely warping will be a problem. Trace the pattern with a light pressure on your pencil. Only the pattern lines will be left when you have completed the work and you do not want impressions from the pencil tracing in your fine detail.

Keeping a uniform and even carving depth in wood cut block may not seem as important as with incised carving work, however keep the carved work both neat and even. By the time you have finished printing form the block you will discover that you are left with a beautiful stained piece of woodworking well worth displaying. So take time during the carving process to insure a finely finished piece of art carving.

Once the carving is completed the block is turned faced down onto a sanding board to insure an absolutely flat finished surface. Keep the sanding to a minimum.

bird2Using a smooth piece of hardwood, burnish the face of the carving by rubbing the hardwood over the surface of the block. This will make the carving block appear shiny and seals the surface of your work. Rub the surface, do not press with the
hardwood burnisher so hard that it indents the surface of the block. Light pressure is enough to seal the wood.

Using print block ink that you can obtain from most arts and craft stores, a water soluble coloring agent, coat the surface of the block. Rollers are available for this purpose and avoid excessive ink from collecting in the grooves of the wood, creating a clearer print. To use a roller, place a small amount of ink on a sheet of glass. Push the roller over the ink several times, changing the angle of the stroke each time to evenly distribute the color.

Next, coat the surface of the block exactly as you did the roller, changing directions to insure an even coloring. The block is now turned face down onto the paper that is to be prints. A larger board is placed on top of the block and clamped to create pressure against the paper and carved block. The most simple clamping can be done by placing your hands with out stretched fingers onto the board. Center your body over the middle of the board and push down slowly. Leave this assembly together for a slow count of ten, that is all the time it takes to transfer the ink.

Remove the board, flip the block over with the paper still in place. Gently lift the paper from the block. Begin at one corner and peal the print away from the wood with a slow even pressure. The paper print will need to dry overnight on a flat surface.

Image9Wipe the excess ink away from the block surface. Any ink that has puddled in the carved lines may be removed with a cotton swab, be sure to check the wood afterwards for cotton fibers left from the swab. Do not wash the surface with water, this will cause swelling of the wood and distort your design.

Repeated prints can be made from one wood cut block, but each successive print will become a little less clear. Chose how many prints you will be making off the wood block before you begin, let us assume that you will be making 25 copies. Test the block with a print, the first ones can be unclear or smeared because the wood block has not yet be seasoned with ink. When you make your first crisp print, mark it in the margin of the paper on the left side with the number 1/25. Write the name of your design in the center of the margin area, and sign and date the the right side of the margin. You have just created the first print in your Limited Edition wood block design. Twenty five prints may seem a lot for your first wood block but you will soon come to discover that everyone you know will want one.

The printing can be done over a long period of time, many days or weeks, as long as the block is stored flat to avoid any warping. When your printed edition is complete, gently wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth, do not saturate the wood with water. Now frame and hang the wood block. With this technique you get both beautiful printed pictures and the wood block carving.

Limited Color Palette for Wood Crafts

A limited color palette allows you total control over which elements in your painting become dominant; which become secondary; and which fall into the foreground, mid-ground, or background.  So whether you do fine art paintings, wood carvings, or pyrography, understanding how  limited palette can work for your craft makes the painting steps so much easier.

You probably are already using a limited color palette but may not realize that the way you chose your colors has a name and purpose. So let’s do a little art color theory exploration.

What captures your attention first?
   1. The barn scene.
   2. The path and background mountains.
   3. The Christmas tree and fence lights.

It is the Christmas tree and fence lights that catch my eye. The barn scene becomes a secondary element which simply tells the story of where that Christmas tree is located.  The reason the tree is dominate is because I have used a limited color palette.

PLANNING YOUR PALETTE
Limiting your color palette does not necessary mean using just a minimal number of colors, although that is one method of creating a limited palette painting.

This painting used fifteen different colors but specifically limits where each color can be used.
For this sample it means that I have carefully planned in advance where I would use my colors and what type of color – neutral, pure, or tonal value – I would use for each element.

I began by categorizing each element in the painting as a neutral area, natural area, man made area, tree lights area, and the main feature of the design. This gives me five types of elements in the pattern.

ASSIGNING TONAL VALUE PALETTES
Neutrals are my blending and shading tones for my natural and man made elements. These are simple white, black, and mid-tone brown.

Naturals are my snow, sky, mountains, and trees. For this palette I chose mid-tone gray-scaled colors of medium blue-gray, medium purple-gray, and medium green-gray. All three have the same muted mid-range gray tone which unities them on the tonal value scale.

Man made elements include the barns, the silos, and the fence posts. To make these areas slightly different from the natural tones I have added a medium red-gray to my colors. This color is only used in those man made objects.

Tree light elements use a total new palette of only primary and secondary pure colors that contain no white, gray, or black toning.

Highlights of pink and pale bright green are used only in the primary element of the main Christmas tree to make it the dominant feature of the entire design.

GRAY SCALE V. PURE COLOR
Gray-scaled tonal value colors are used throughout this scene, with the exception of the tree light color palette.
The greatest contrast of those tones are found in the barn roof overhangs where the pure white of the snow meets the darkest black tone of the barn wall shadows. The strength of this black-white contrast is most often found in the front elements of your mid-ground area.

As you come forward in a scene, into the foreground, more colors can be distinguished and therefore there are less black-toned elements. A foreground tree trunk has shades of brown and gray where a mid-ground tree trunk tends to lose that coloring therefore going into the black-tones.

Background scene elements tend to be in the white-toned area of your colors. Distant trees, mountains, and the sky area of worked in the pale white-gray tones.

PURE COLOR TONAL VALUES
Pure colors as primary and secondary hues have no added white, gray, or black tone and therefore no real tonal value.

Those bright pure colors become mid-toned with only as much visual impact to the design as the background mountains.
In the gray scaled painting what has become dominant are the areas of greatest tonal value contrast – those areas where the blackest tones lies directly against the brightest white tone.

Home Sweet Home- Jewel-Toned Dark Value Palette
This Home Sweet Home hen uses a limited palette of only dark-toned valued colors – dark red-brown, dark green-blue, dark yellow, and dark brown. The dark toned colors are often called jewel tones.
As a folk art design the elements in the pattern are simple and a very limited color palette emphasizes that simplicity.

Snow Day
My final example of limited palette coloring for your wood crafts uses only primary
and secondary colors. No tertiary hues are used.  Since this is a wood burning this small wall heart
was painted using watercolors which allow all of the sepia burning to show underneath the hue.
The full tutorial and pattern are found here …

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR OUR PAINTING?
It means that color dominates tonal value, that dramatic changes in tonal value dominate over mid-toned values, and that by choosing to limit our color palette we, the artist, decide which elements we want to have the strongest impact in the final design.

I can push an area forward by using pure color hues or I can set the element firmly in the mid-ground range by using dramatic tonal contrasts, or I can push the area into the far background by using closely related mid-toned values.

Ceremonial Mask – Transparent Wash-Tone Palette
Only very water-thinned, pure color make the limited palette for this Ceremonial Mask relief carving.
By only using transparent coloring and coloring without a gray-tone addition,
the wood grain and antiquing remain dominant.
Pattern available in Ceremonial Masks

HOW DO I GIVE EXTRA IMPACT?
Our original limited palette contains only two pastel tones – pink which is red plus white, and pale Caribbean green which is green plus white. Neither of these colors contain gray or black.

Those two pastels, used only in the main Christmas tree are enough color change to separate this tree from the other lit pine tree and the fence line lights.
